Giving Rewards to children for their effort and hard work is extremely crucial to encourage them to give their best. A well designed Rewards Program can help improve their performance studies or any other field. Children need motivation and encouragement and rewards create a feeling of pride and achievement. A Rewards Program, which motivates and praises children for every little effort and achievement, is key to keep them engaged in studies.  

At Push Teacher we have designed a Rewards Program which encourages children for every little effort using reward points, encouraging messages at every stage, badges, and ranks. In this blog we explain all the features of Push Teacher rewards program. All children can see their rewards by going to My Rewards.

Stars

Children collect Stars for every Lesson they complete, Quiz they attempt and Assignment they complete. The number of Stars they collect is based on their performance. E.g. If a child scores less than 80% of the score the children earn 10 stars, for scores more than 80% they earn 20 stars and for passing the quiz they get 40 stars. That ensures that they earn stars for every attempt, even when they are attempting the same quiz multiple times.

Children can access their reward points by going to My Rewards where they can see their point balance.  In addition, they can access all award transactions in My Earnings tab where they can see all the transactions for awards by date.

Badges

Children love badges! It gives them a sense of Achievement and Pride. Children collect badges when they have mastered a Topic. E.g. when they pass the quiz for Number Bonds – 10 they get a badge for Number Bonds – 10. They are notified immediately after they pass the required quiz. Children can also view the badges by going to My Rewards and then click on Tab My Achievements.

Levels

Children love games, and in any game as they move up the levels, it creates a sense of Achievement and Pride in children. Same is the concept of Levels at Push Teacher.  Everybody starts with Level Newbees and Children earn Stars by completing Lessons, Quizzes and Assignments. As they collect stars, they move up their Level. E.g. when they reach 1000 stars, they move up to Silver Level. Below are the all the levels hierarchy and points required to achieve the level.

If your child has started to Nursery or Reception, you might have come across the term Number Bonds. After reading this blog, you will know what are Numbers Bonds? And how to user these to solve addition and subtraction problems and improve mental math.

 

What are Number Bonds?

 

Number Bonds show how numbers join and how they break down into parts. They are a visual representation of part-part-whole. You can represent Number Bonds by 3 circles connected with lines. First circle contains the whole, while the parts are in adjoining circles.

These translate to addition and subtraction facts as shown in the picture below. Let’s take an example where 10 is whole and parts are 6 and 4. The numbers in each part add up to whole i.e. 6 + 4 = 10 and 4 + 6 = 10.   They also represent the Subtraction facts where Whole minus one part gives you the other part. i.e. 10 – 6 = 4 and 10 – 4 = 6.

Why are Number Bonds important?

 

Number bonds help children memorize addition and subtract facts. As a result, children can do many calculations mentally(faster – without using fingers) and develop a greater tendency to do well in math which improves their self-confidence. In addition, they help students solve addition and subtraction word problems.

In most schools in the UK, children start learning Number Bonds in Reception, starting with 1-5. As they become more confident they continue from 6-10. It is important to continue learning number bonds up to 20, as often many students even though confident on addition and subtraction facts to 10, don’t continue further from 11 to 20. As a result, they do mistakes on carry over and take longer in addition and subtraction. If the children are confident on addition and subtraction facts from 11-20, they do complex addition and subtraction calculations quickly and accurately. 

We have designed our Number bonds course based on adaptive learning, which automatically adjusts to flow of the course based on how children perform. So, e.g. if a children is already fluent on a topic, then he/she can just take the test and doesn’t have to go through all the practice lessons/quizzes and worksheets. For topics which are new to child, he/she can take the practice quizzes unlimited number of times. For each attempt the children collect stars, which motivates and engage children. After completing each quiz, children can see motivational messages as they keep moving to the next Levels. At each milestone, they earn badges on a successful pass on a Test. Passing score is 95%.

We also understand that children don’t just practice online, they also need to practice offline on paper. We provide practice sheets as part of quiz materials. With printable sheets, Children develop good writing skills, and practice away from screen as well.

Times Tables

We all have learnt and memorized Times Tables in our school days. However, as a Parent it’s important to understand why is learning Times Tables is important for children and when should children learn which Times Tables. Many schools in the early years teach times tables as a number series e.g. time table of 2 is 2,4,6,8,10….. Although this may seem to be an easier approach, it’s important that children remember these as facts. E.g. 2 X 5. So rather than counting with fingers 5 times the children should recall immediately that 2 X 5 = 10. This is very key and sometimes many children don’t get rid of the habit of counting with their fingers, which can cause a problem with mental maths in later years. As a result children loose confidence in Maths and start disliking the subject. 

On the other hand, if children start learning the times tables as facts and memorize them, they can do many calculations faster and easier mentally and develop a greater tendency to do well in maths which improves their self-confidence.

When should children learn times tables?

This can vary depending upon schools and the capability of children. However, it’s important to start in the right sequence. During Reception children should start with 2 Times Table and continue further on 5 and 10 times table in Year 1 and Year 2.  The important thing to remember here is that it’s not just multiplication, it helps in division as well as doubles and halves.

In late KS1 or at the start of Year 3 children should start with 3,4,6,8 times table. To learn timetable 4, children can use 2 times table, so to get 4 X 6 they can double the answer of 2 X 6. Same applies to 6 times table which children can learn based on 3 times table. And a further they can use 4 times table to learn 8 times table. Once children become confident on times tables 3,4,6,8 then times tables, they can start 7,9,11 and 12 times tables.

Mental Maths

In the early years of School in Nursery and Reception it’s normal for children to start learning counting on fingers. However, for many children it becomes a habit and even in later years of KS2 many children keep counting on fingers which impacts their Mental Maths ability. As a consequence they find it difficult to do calculations in head which impacts their performance and overall confidence in Maths as a subject. It’s important for children to move to the habit of counting in head and work on Mental Maths in Year 1 and Year 2 and continue in later years.

Number bonds and Times Tables are two key foundation building blocks to develop mental months. They help children perform calculations in the head faster. As they get confident in number bonds and times tables, they automatically start doing calculations in the head rather than counting on Fingers. 

How to Improve Mental Maths?

There are no shortcuts for moving from Counting on Fingers to Counting in Head. Every child takes his/her own time in developing the habit of counting in head. However what we as Parents can do is help them practice Number Bonds and Times tables as much as possible and let them develop confidence in their Mental Maths skills. What you will see is as they get confident in Mental and memorize the number facts, they will automatically move from Counting on Fingers to Counting in Head.
